The Luteal Love Slice: A No-Bake Recipe for the Week Your Cravings Hit Hard

There's a week every month where I am ravenous. Not peckish. Ravenous. And I usually have a sweet tooth. It's the week before my period, and I used to fight it. Now I just make sure there's something in the freezer that actually satisfies it.

This is that something. Six ingredients, no oven, ready in the time it takes to freeze.

Why the luteal phase makes you crave everything

If you've ever wondered why the week before your period feels like your appetite has a mind of its own, there's a real reason. Progesterone rises during the luteal phase and interferes with serotonin, the neurotransmitter that keeps mood and appetite steady. When serotonin dips, your body reaches for carbs to bring it back up. At the same time, insulin sensitivity drops, so blood sugar swings higher and crashes harder, which just makes the cravings louder.

This isn't a willpower problem. It's biology. The smarter move isn't to fight the craving, it's to meet it with something that won't leave you crashing an hour later.

That's what this slice is built for.

What's actually in it, and why

Cacao. Luna is ceremonial-grade cacao paste, which means the whole bean is retained — nothing stripped out. It's one of the richest plant-based sources of magnesium there is, and magnesium is one of the most common things women run low on, especially in the week before their period. It also naturally contains theobromine and mood-supporting compounds that make a cup, or a square, genuinely feel different in your body. Not a placebo. A shift you can feel.

Dates. Real sugar, with fibre attached. That fibre is what keeps this from spiking and crashing you the way refined sugar does.

Almond butter. Healthy fats, a little protein, and magnesium of its own. This is what makes the slice steady fuel instead of a sugar hit that fades in twenty minutes.

Six ingredients. No oven. No fuss.

Luteal Love Slice

Makes one small tray, cut into 9 squares

Ingredients

  • 5 dates, split and pitted

  • 150g almond butter

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil, divided

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

  • 40g Luna Cacao

  • Flaky sea salt

Method

  1. Line a small tray or dish with baking paper. Press the split date halves into the base, cut side up, so that it covers the tray.

  2. Melt the almond butter with 1 tbsp coconut oil. Pour over the dates. Freeze for 15 minutes, until firm.

  3. Melt the remaining coconut oil and take off the heat. Stir in the Luna Cacao until smooth. Stir in the maple syrup.

  4. Pour the cacao layer over the top.

  5. Freeze until fully set. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt, then cut into squares.

  6. Let each piece sit for 10 minutes at room temperature before eating.

I make a tray the week before I need it and forget about it in the freezer until I do. Then it's just there — waiting for the week it's for.

Save this one. Make it the week before your period, keep it in the freezer, and let it do its job.
