Frequently asked questions

what is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao, often referred to as cacao paste or cacao liquor, is a rich and pure form of cacao with its fats intact. While it is one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, it is also revered in many cultures for its use in spiritual practices and ceremonial rituals. Some people believe that to qualify as ceremonial or "ceremonial grade," cacao must adhere to specific criteria regarding its growing region, harvesting, and processing methods. While we honour cacao as a powerful plant medicine and teacher, we also recognise that many of these definitions and standards are largely influenced by Western perspectives.

what is the difference between ceremonial cacao and cacao powder?

Ceremonial cacao is minimally processed, retaining the full spectrum of nutrients and the natural fats from the cacao beans. It’s typically harvested using traditional methods, such as hand-picking, and processed at lower temperatures to preserve its rich, complex flavour and nutritional benefits. This type of cacao is often used in spiritual ceremonies and rituals, where it’s consumed in its purest form to promote emotional release, heart-opening, and spiritual connection.

In contrast, regular cacao undergoes more extensive processing, including higher temperature roasting and the separation of cacao butter from the solids. This results in a product that is less nutrient-dense and has a sweeter, smoother taste. Regular cacao is most commonly used in culinary applications, such as chocolate-making, and is generally more accessible and mass-produced.

The main differences lie in their processing, nutritional content, and intended use. Ceremonial cacao is celebrated for its purity, depth of flavour, and connection to spiritual practices, while regular cacao is geared more toward everyday consumption and dessert-making.

It’s known for its heart-opening properties, mood-enhancing effects, and ability to relax both the body and mind. It’s also a fantastic source of magnesium, calcium, and other essential nutrients.

how much ceremonial cacao should i have?

Every body is beautifully unique, so we encourage you to listen to your intuition. For reference, we provide dosage suggestions here. If you're new to cacao, we recommend starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it as you become more familiar with its effects. Cacao isn’t something to be feared; while it contains a natural stimulant called theobromine, its effects are gentle compared to coffee.

At higher doses, you may experience a noticeable buzz. If it feels like too much, we suggest grounding yourself by eating some food, practicing breathwork, or connecting with the earth. Remember to also stay hydrated, as cacao can be a diuretic.

what time should i have my ceremonial cacao?

This is entirely a matter of personal preference! Some people enjoy their cacao first thing in the morning for a connection or an energy boost, while others prefer it in the afternoon as a pick-me-up. Many also find it helpful to drink a cup in the evening to relax before bedtime. You might even choose to indulge whenever a craving strikes, as cacao is both nutritious and delicious! Pay attention to how your body responds and adjust your timing accordingly.

can i drink ceremonial cacao outside of a ceremonial context?

Definitely! We believe that ceremonial cacao shouldn’t be limited to ceremonial settings. Each person has a unique relationship with cacao, and even those who partake in formal ceremonies can enjoy a cup in various contexts for different reasons. Whether it’s for a moment of connection, relaxation, or simply to savour its rich flavour, feel free to enjoy ceremonial cacao whenever it calls to you!

can i drink ceremonial cacao as a coffee replacement?

Yes! Many people use ceremonial cacao as a coffee alternative. Thanks to the compound theobromine, cacao offers gentle, long-lasting energy without the jitters or crashes often associated with coffee. It not only relaxes you but also provides a smoother, more balanced boost to your energy levels.

can i cook with ceremonial cacao?

Yes, you can! Ceremonial cacao is especially excellent for use in raw vegan desserts, adding rich flavor and health benefits. It can be incorporated into smoothies, energy bites, and various baked goods. can i have ceremonial cacao if i am pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you have any concerns, we recommend seeking guidance from a trusted healthcare professional. Our founder enjoyed ceremonial cacao throughout her pregnancy and postpartum without any contraindications. In fact, she found it to be a supportive and nurturing addition during those times when extra care is especially welcome.

why is there discolouration on my ceremonial cacao?

Our cacao is in its raw, pure, and unadulterated form. The discolouration you may notice is known as "bloom," which occurs when cacao butter separates from the cacao mass as it cools after being molded. Many are accustomed to seeing tempered cacao with added ingredients, but this discoloration is simply a characteristic of cacao in its natural state. Rest assured, our cacao is of the highest quality, with all of its nutrients and neurochemicals intact to support you in whichever way you choose to consume it.
